- Description
- En The last session of a retreat, this is a slow and deep guided meditation with light. Starting with purification practices and the main principles of meditation–energy, consciousness, ecstasy–and three levels of light–physical, uncreated, luminous intelligence–participants visualize light emerging from a horizon, dream state landscapes of the soul, being like a crystal and firefly, and consciously radiating light from the chakras. Gradually, one moves into other dimensions–realms of light: luminous intelligence, archangels, light upon light. The session ends with the zikr of light.

En
Our last meditation is going to be on light, and I hope you learned to make a note of the different steps.
Of course, one should really start by doing one's purification practices and that is a must for everybody in the morning, and always start with the exhaling. [long pause]
You remember, the first one was filtering [pause]
and then the second one is washing that with water, that is the flow. Call it the ionic flow. [pause]
And then radiance, the third one, fire and light. [pause]
And then pure spirit and intense vibration, the symphony of the spheres. pause]
All right. So, before we start, remember the basic principles of meditation. First of all we are working with energy, with consciousness, and with ecstasy. Energy, consciousness, ecstasy. There are many forms of energy, ranging from pure spirit to mechanical energy,
and psychological energies—or psychic energy—is part of it. Consciousness, awareness, it's like that that is the breakthrough matter, one that is always there, and when it is not involved in the dichotomy of subject/object, then it is pure intelligence.
And ecstasy is the subtle energy behind the whole universe and in its high form it's glorification.
The other thing about meditation is altering one's sense, one's notion of the universe by changing one's focus, the focus of one's consciousness, and altering one's own sense of identity by changing one's focus.
A practice of light... we're working at least at three different levels. One is a physical level, increasingly radiation of the body. It is called the aura, with its different frequencies ranging from infrared, which is fire, to ultraviolet, which is light and of course, the whole visible range in between. And then the second one is one experiences oneself as a being of light, which is what the Christian fathers call uncreated light.
And thirdly, we have the three planes. In the high plane one is a luminous consciousness or a luminous intelligence and we use the word divine glance, because the Sufis make a difference between the light that is seen--that's the aura--and the light that sees, and that is the divine glance.
It's like the original being divided into subjects and objects in the beginning of time. So, first of all we're going to work with the aura and then pass on to the higher forms of light. In fact, what it means is the aura will trigger off the light of the higher bodies. I made this distinction of three but, of course, there are many, many more levels to it.
The principle we work on is that by imagining light, one radiates more light, and that's been confirmed scientifically.
So, we start with an act of imagination. But to make that more effective, I think it's better to get oneself in a dream state, because in one's ordinary consciousness one knows that one is experiencing other than oneself. There's a difference between the spectator and the object. Whereas in dream, the landscapes of the soul are derived from the subject projected in front of him. So that one can say he is one at the same time the spectator and the object that one contemplates, and that sense one is getting closer to the original state of God where all is one. In the dream state you withdraw from your body consciousness, and especially from the physical world, and let the creative action, what is called creative imagination, follow its course. Of course, you could say one plugs into the collective thinking of the universe and maybe specifically of humanity, and gives it its free wave.
It's the same act which created us, the same process, creative imagination, which we dedicate further.
Behind that creativity there is emotion. It's the emotion behind the universe. And so, when we get into a very high state of joy--it's the word ecstasy--it manifests as imagination. One tries to give form to all that is experienced as emotion and the consequence is landscapes of the soul.
And so just let yourself get into what they call a visionary state and imagine these wonderful landscapes that you see sometimes in very beautiful dreams, in iaphanous light.
I gave you once the image of the sunrise over the horizon, but it could be even more wonderful than that, for example, the light, the sun rising over the clouds, when one is flying above the clouds. Or then just these very unreal landscapes that I'm talking about. But the one thing that is important is the emergence of light over a horizon.
That means the horizon is, of course, your reach and the light is the source from which you derive your light. Whenever one faces the source from which one derives one's light, there is delight, communion with light.
So a light then emerges upon the horizon of your being--impinges upon your being and affects you very deeply.
You are aglow with the effulgence that falls upon your chest and your arms and your head, face, and you open up the pores of your skin to see this warm light. You
might even open up the palms of your hand.
What is more, the light does not only hit the surface of your skin but enters deeply into your body. Indeed, high frequency rays enter into the body.
So one of the thoughts you can have is that you're like a crystal. Crystal allows light to pass through it. It is transparent.
What light does to you... you're experiencing what light does to you. Well at least first of all, it makes you aware of something that's very familiar to you and namely that you are yourself luminous, that's what it does to you. So that's the second quality of the crystal. It does not only allow the light to pass through it, but it also fluoresces itself.
It means that it transforms its material into light, its electrons into photons, and that's what you experience. Now, you could think of yourself as being a firefly or any of those insects and animals that generate light out of their own body, called bioluminescence. That's different from the crystal. Here the body itself supplies the energy that is radiated out as light,
and indeed I'm only making you aware of something that does happen in you, because the body does radiate light and that's what they call the aura, and by consciously radiating light you can increase the amount of light that you radiate,
And it's a very subtle modulation that is within your command. You can either radiate red or infrared, that's in the area of heat, and red by tensing your muscles, cranking your body, imagining that you're having a hot shower, and then your body fuel will burn faster, temperature will increase if you're radiating infrared, or then you could emit higher frequencies of light. There's a control mechanism that is connected with vibration frequencies, isn't it, so that's the connection between sound and light. So you can vibrate a very fine attunement of vibration.
I think it's the etheric body but it affects the vibration of the atoms and molecules of the cells of the body and just by imagining different colors of light, you will adjust your body to just produce the right vibration.
So, let's start with the heart center and just think of it as a sun, a golden disc. It's a miniature sun, let's say, a replica of the sun in us. You find that it's very central in your aura. It may be the central point in the aura, if not the central point in the body. And send out light in all directions, golden bright light, but there are certain areas which seem to be more intense, like right in front and then on both sides, laterally, and then indeed through the shoulder blades that are depicted as the wings of the angels,
and when those wings are not extended out they form a mantle of light, and it's a kind of shield of light because that's where one is going to be attacked, in the back, in the case of the Parsifal legends’--Amfortras–so one has to have a shield of light in the back. That's the mantle of light.
And reach out and now, you can reach out forward much more.
Now you'll notice that at the bottom of the spine the form assumed by the light is a very vivid red, like the bottom of a flame, like red hot coals. And you can enhance that heat production by exhaling very strongly as you concentrate on the bottom of the spine. It produces heat in the whole body and that applies to the first chakra and to the second chakra.
There are various types of red, including the solar plexus, which has a little more orange. And now I would simply concentrate on the physical eyes, a light radiating off the physical eyes. Remember when we were working with the healing, the energy coming out of the hands, you remember we imagined that the etheric hands are extended beyond our physical hands, or etheric fingers that extend beyond our physical fingers. In the same way there is an extension of your eyes ... the radiation from your eyes projects forward from your eyes like beams of light; and imagine it to be blue.
That's a much higher frequency, it requires a much finer attunement of your being than the heart—than the golden radiance of the heart–and for that there's quite a number of images like the blue of the iceberg–a very gentle blue; of course, the blue of the sky,
The rainbow, of course, versus the order of colors.
Now, get into a still finer violet color when you concentrate on the third eye, eyeballs upwards, turned slightly inwards…
Now, perhaps you know, when watching a wood fire, there are different colors in the flame that are very red, red at the bottom and in some flames you have--there's yellow, of course, in the middle where it's more towards the top–but then above that there's cream sometimes, and then blue and violet. That's what one has to concentrate upon. Like an amethyst, violet. [long pause]
Now, if you proceed a little higher, then you get in your crown center, and you get like a diamond. It is very difficult to describe it now because you know that in the diamond there are a lot of different hues.
One calls it white light. It isn't white exactly... it's diaphanous.
Now, of course, the third eye is turned absolutely upwards and passing through the opening at the top of the head and the beam of the third eye moves right upwards higher and higher and, in fact, you get into the radiance of the Crown Center, which
is like a diamond. It includes all colors and yet it has no color and it's not a beam.
No, it’s difficult to describe. It's more like concentric quantum leaps upwards.
You are reaching into spheres of light. You realize there's no frontier in the crown center. In fact, it is really the light of the heavens. It's no more the radiation of your body or let's say your aura, maybe
is part of the aura of the planet, which is part of the aura of the solar system and so on and so forth. You're getting into very wide spaces of light
and I know so far we've been thinking of, well, the spatial location of different circles upwards. Now one is moving upwards, but not really in space. Just other dimensions... let's say fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh dimension, 11th or whatever nth dimension of space.
And so, you have to let yourself be carried into those realms of light and remember that in order to be able to do that you have to, for one thing, not wanting it to change the notion of yourself and accept that you are being of light, yourself, who had donned a body of physical matter in the course of the descent,
and, as such, you are spread out in the whole realm of light that you're perceiving, instead of thinking of self as being localized somewhere in that area.
In fact, there seem to be different spheres of light, each one brighter and more blinding and vaster than the one prior to it.
You're really, really re-experiencing what you were and the realms that are familiar to you before your birth on earth and that manifests as a breakthrough of joy. There's such a thing as the ecstasy of light.
It's so infinite and unlimited, intense brilliance, clearing, clarifying, cleansing.
It's the meaning of transfiguration.
Indeed, matter is continually being transmuted into light, electrons into photons, and vice versa, of course. Light has been converted into matter, photons into electrons.
And so, you are originally a being of light and even the matter of your body was originally light and so you're reaching back into your source, your origin.
Just as one had found oneself weighted down more and more into a world of shadows. where we are separated by a lot of smog from the light of one's origin, and now one is returned back to the realms of one's origin.
That's the breakthrough, when one can say: Now, I know. That's what I am. I am a being of light.
That's my real being. All the other things have added themselves to it. That's what I really am.
Now, that's only one aspect of your being. It's like a super body that is just made of light. That's what you mean when you say I'm a being of light. But there are always two aspects--unless one reaches right up to the top. There's the body and there is the consciousness. And so I am a luminous consciousness. That's the next realization, I am a luminous consciousness. That's really what I am and the body of light was something that accrued to me in the descent. That's the next realization.
And that is evidenced by your realization that, in fact, you are throwing light upon all things. And that's the Light of Consciousness. Wherever you go, wherever you turn, you will cast the Light of Consciousness upon all objects and reveal their secret,
even x-raying them.
And this is enhanced by awakening! That's something you can do to yourself. It's like taking yourself from your own perspective, which dulls that light of consciousness, and becoming EMINENTLY AWARE.
Consciousness is light. It's the light that sees, not the light that is seen.
Now, of course, there is an intuition that the light that sees is extended through my glance, so, seen from my vantage point, I am the eyes through which that glance is channeled
into interfacing with objects.
I am the eyes through which God sees.
But I'm not just the window. No, I'm an extension of the Divine glance. My consciousness is an extension of the divine glance, like the branch of a tree but where's the frontier? Nay, I AM the divine glance. There's no limit, no upward limit where my consciousness starts and the divine consciousness ends. It's all the divine consciousness. Just imagine: I am the Divine Consciousness.
God is not other than me up there somewhere. I am the Divine Consciousness.
Not only does that luminous consciousness perceive all things, by casting its light upon all things but it casts its hallmark upon all upon which it casts its glance, leaving the mark of its glance upon all things, for those who have eyes to see that which transpires behind that which appears.
So my glance is creative.
It's like the sun looking at the sunflower and recognizing itself from the sunflower,
seeing its image reflected in that upon which it glances.
Now, there are a lot of intermediaries between this extension of the Divine glance that is my glance, and the Nur al Anwar, the light of all lights, and that is the hierarchy of Archangels. And so, let's say my glance is derived from the glance of an archangel, the Archangel of the planet earth who derives his light from the glance of the Archangel of the sun or of the solar system and he derives his light from the light of the Archangel of the galaxy. And he derives his light from the light of still higher complexity, greater compass and so on. Each being deriving his light from one who's hierarchically above him, in a whole hegemony of light. Light
moving from the pinnacle of light which is divine intelligence, down to matter which is a crystallization of light, through every degree, our consciousness being part of this whole process
from the light of divine intelligence, to that network of lights that is the starry universe.
I am caught in the miracle of light, part of it
functioning in it and contributing towards it and enlightened by it.
It's a miracle of life. The miracle of life is the miracle of light,
the sheer drunkenness of light, intoxication of light.
I have awakened from the world of shadows into the world of light.
Now what you can do is to illuminate your aura with the light of the divine glance, of which your glance is the extension, by what's called the zikr of light. So, you can do the motion of the zikr, the circle as you survey your aura with your glance and, indeed, hold the light of all objects, like the auras of all persons, the whole world of light passing through matter, say filtering through matter, survey it and the circle and when you your head comes down then you illuminate, you kindle your aura, although it's already lighted. This is the meaning of Light upon light in the Surah of the Quran.
Light upon light. And so, the aura is not just the result of the combustion of the body, but the hybrid between that, on one hand, and ton he other hand, the light of pure consciousness, the light upon the light.
You can do the second zikr, of course, just up and down and cut out the surveying, but just illuminate your aura with the light of the divine glance and then return back, let's say, to the orient of light from which you originate. In order to do this you have to go through purification of all your thoughts and your emotions, become very clean because--I quote Plotinus-- "In order to look into the sun, you have to have eyes like the sun." [long pause]
Alright, God bless you.
